“You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lamp stand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5: 14-16)
With the end of daylight savings time, the world always seems to get a bit darker. As the days get shorter and colder, many of us will fight to fend off the melancholy that can accompany the coming of winter. For Christians, this darkness can be a reminder that we live in a fallen world that is in need of lights to illumine the path that leads to God. Through our good works, we allow God’s light to shine both for ourselves and others. As our friends from Ireland put it in song, “Blessings are not just for the ones who kneel, luckily”. God’s blessings come from his gift of grace, which is open to all. Christians are called to continually remind the world through our lives that God is the source of all blessings. How will you be a light for others today?
